The tale tells of a prince who wants to marry a princess but has trouble finding a suitable wife. He meets many princesses, but is never sure if they are the real ones. One stormy night, a young woman drenched in a rainstorm seeks refuge in the prince's palace. She claims to be a princess, but the queen has doubts. She decides to test their unexpected guest by placing a pea in the proposed bed, which is covered by twenty mattresses.
